Since the very first organized racing contest in 1887, it’s safe to say that both racing and technology have come a long way. Cars are smarter, drivers are better, and tracks are tougher. Every racing season brings an opportunity to get faster and improve function and Audi knows this better than most.

As one of the oldest active racing competitions in history, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the hardest in the business. Cars need to be fuel efficient to eliminate stopping time, while drivers need to have superior endurance to stay focused for long periods of driving.

Audi racing has evolved with the times and is one of the most consistent 24 Hours of Le Mans winners thanks to successful designs and improvements each season.

It takes a lot to win the Le Mans, but what specific aspects of a car make it a winner in 2016? To what point have supercars evolved?

What it takes to be a winning Audi Le Mans racecar.

To win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, your car needs to be lightweight, fuel efficient, and incredibly aerodynamic.

These five design elements are the key to success at Le Mans:

  1. Downsized engines
  2. Hybrid drivetrain
  3. Lightweight materials
  4. Aerodynamic design
  5. Ergonomic

Over time, Le Mans results have resulted in new racing regulations that limit LM P1 cars with gasoline-powered engines to a 16.5 gallon fuel tank. Diesel-powered hybrids are limited to 13.1 gallons.

In addition to fuel tank size regulations, LM P1’s can’t exceed an overall 1,929 pounds. Audi Motorsport took this into account when they built the Audi R18 with a carbon fiber composite gearbox with titanium inserts that keep weight down and racing times up.
